In 2013 the Irish Academy of Management established a special interest group (SIG) in the allied academic fields of HRM, industrial relations, organizational behaviour and psychology, sociology and political economy. The mission of the SIG is to foster dialogue and co-operation between members and research students working in these areas. Following on from the successful inaugural event ‘Building an academic career’, convened by Prof Bill Roche at UCD in May 2014 and a roundtable event ‘Work, Employment and Organization in Austerity and Recovery’ at the IAM annual conference, DCU will host the next SIG meeting on the theme of ‘Navigating Publication’. This event will involve sharing experiences and lessons on how individuals and research teams have positioned, revised and managed the impact of their research in a context where there are increasing pressures for success in this domain. All IAM members working in the SIG disciplines are welcome to attend, as are PhD students in these disciplines.

Navigating publication: A career reflective
Keynote address by Professor William Brown, Emeritus Master of Darwin College and Emeritus Professor of Industrial Relations at Cambridge University. Professor Brown has published widely in the areas of collective bargaining, workplace trade union organisation, pay determination, payment systems, arbitration, and minimum wages.

Inaugural SIG Event: ‘Building an Academic Career’
I am pleased to report that the SIG’s inaugural event at UCD on May 1st, ‘Building an Academic Career’, was a great success, attracting some 60 participants and contributors. There was much lively and frank discussion on such themes as challenges in teaching and learning, research and publishing and career balance and progression.
Thanks are due to all contributors to the day’s activities and to the UCD School of Business, and its Dean, Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, for generously supporting the event.
Following discussion at the May meeting of the IAM Council, a number of proposals were approved regarding the ongoing activities of the SIG.
Meeting and Roundtable at the IAM Annual Conference at UL
A ‘general meeting’ of SIG members will be held at UL during the 2014 Annual Conference, followed by a roundtable discussion on the theme of ‘Work, Employment and Organization in Austerity and Recovery’. The session is scheduled for Thursday September 4th at 4.45pm.
Other SIG Events in 2014-2015 and Beyond – Proposals Welcome!
The Council decided that ideally two SIG events would be held each year in addition to any events held in conjunction with IAM annual conferences.
One of these might be held in winter, possibly during December, and another in spring, during May.
It was agreed by Council that the key to the success of the SIG is for members and their institutions to organize and host these events and to put forward proposals as to their focus and format. Events could range from evening and half-day to daylong sessions and involve seminars, roundtables, symposiums, workshops, lectures etc.
In this way SIG activities would generate wide participation by members and events rotated across universities and colleges. The IAM Council is prepared to provide reasonable support for organizers of SIG activities.
I would be delighted to receive proposals for SIG events in winter 2014 and during 2015, and these can also be discussed at the IAM Annual Conference session on September 4th and by the SIG Organizing Group endorsed at the 2013 Annual Conference.
