Event has not reached capacity - registration is now closed

The Irish Academy of Management are delighted to present its fifth PhD Virtual Writers Retreat Initiative. This event will be hosted by the University of Limerick following the successful event hosted by Technological University Dublin in March 2022. This series offers a collegial virtual environment to promote PhD academic progress facilitated by established academics. Its goal is to support progress in PhD skill development through mutual motivation and communal accountability.

What is a PhD virtual writers retreat?

What is a PhD virtual writers retreat?

This virtual writing retreat provides a block of time (2.5 hours each day over 5 days) to focus on the writing process. By writing within a community of other PhD students the aim is to facilitate your progress through mutual motivation and communal accountability.

This virtual event will be facilitated by a senior academic who can offer advice at each break as questions arise relating to the retreat. It is also an opportunity to meet with peers and discuss opportunities, challenges or strategies for writing. Within the writers retreat, a formal discussion session facilitated by a senior academic will take place on a topic relating to the PhD or writing process e.g. managing writers block, strategies for writing. The retreat will be hosted via MS Teams – details will be shared closer to the date.

  • The retreat will run in a virtual environment over 5 days from 10am to 12.30pm (Irish Time).
  • A discussion around goals for the session will take place at the beginning of the retreat.
  • Daily sessions apply the Pomodoro Technique.

The event draws on the Pomodoro Technique (http://pomodorotechnique.com/) to structure short bursts of writing over a short period. The proposed daily format is:

· 10.00 Welcome and introductions

· 10.15 1st Pomodoro (25 minutes of focused working), followed by a 5 minute break

· 10:45 2nd Pomodoro and break

· 11:15 3rd Pomodoro and break
